Marking
Just at the end of my lunch break now. Today and yesterday I've been marking exams for the first time - it's good experience and really revealing about the difference in people, as to who 'gets' the subject and who doesn't. It's first year geography and degree level, so it should be easy, but some people just haven't done well. I'll also be lecturing in remote sensing in a few weeks too, and the PhD proposal with Nottingham is going well - other projects are being advertised now as well and I need to keep a beady eye out.

I'm also off to London a week on Friday to see my good friend Matt Cook from Durham, and hopefully a few more guys who I know there. Then the Friday after that I'm going to Dundee for the weekend to catch up with everyone there, then on to Edinburgh for a few days for a course. All is going well at church too, and I'm sure I'll be doing things with the guys there too.

The knee is healing up gradually. I have Chondromalacia Patallae, or "Runner's Knee", but I only need to strengthen one of my leg muscles to sort it, then I can go hillwalking again which is good as we're doing Snowdon in March/April time. I should also get to Spain to do some research around then.

In the meantime it's Baltic here, and it's finally going to snow tomorrow morning. Eranu!

I'm glad all is going well. More prayers for the knee. Take care. :)

This is going to be slightly odd but there you go: I'm currently a second year BA student at Durham, and found your LJ ages ago through VM.JCR, anyway! My question is as follows: How easy is it to get funding/on a Masters program at a semi-decent university?

That is slightly odd, but it's all good.

Well, "anon", if you are heading for a 2:1 at Durham and are highly driven towards taking a particular subject further for whatever reason - and can communicate that on paper and/or at interview, then you are in with a great shout of being funded at not only "semi-decent" universities, but the best. I had offers from Oxford (albeit not funded) and Nottingham, and was mentioned for funding at Edinburgh (didn't follow it up) for MSc courses whilst viewing myself as a typical "good" Durham student in the mid-sixties consistently in my marks. I got a distinction for my MSc so if you are a 2:1 level Durham student you can be very confident of great success at masters level anywhere else.

It also depends what your subject is in terms of where the funding is. If you see this then let me know what it is and if I know places to point you towards I'll do that. Research councils are generally the best bet.

I decided to un-anon, as you're so helpful. My subject is tentatively information flow and (post) modern urban form. The sort of stuff Steve Graham does a bit of at Durham. It's pretty tricky acually communicating with the department at the moment because I've wangled myself a place in California on an EAP year abroad program.
Thanks for your help!

Right, well I can safely say that's not my area of expertise! I know that Mike Blakemore at Durham, now retired from teaching, does research into information and how it is used etc. so he could possibly help as well as Steve. If he can't he'll certainly know who can!

You'll have plenty of time in third year to organise a masters so there's no rush now. Enjoy California and get busy with a masters search in October.
